Back in Black and White: New Cut of Emil Johansson’s Groundbreaking ‘Esperanto’ Segment
Esperanto was one of the best mountain bike films of the summer — and we’re still getting more of it, almost 5 months after its original release.
Sometimes an edit is so nice, it’s worth visiting twice. Or, as in the case of this TGR edit of Emil Johansson, there’s so much awesome footage that didn’t make it into the full film, it’s worth going back, digging through it, and making an additional black-and-white cut.
That’s the story behind this latest release from Teton Gravity Research (TGR).
Last spring the action sports film production company released Esperanto. The mountain biking film explored the idea that a sport can transcend language barriers. It played with the concept of mountain biking being a universal language. It’s something that people can share a passion for, and bond over, without sharing a cultural background.
One of the raddest segments from the film was Johansson’s. The Swedish slopestyle rider flies off of huge jumps, stomps big drops off of wooden features, and performs aerial tricks that seem impossible. There was so much footage from the segment that didn’t make it into the full film, that director Jeremy Grant decided to go back and make another edit. (Lucky us!)
This groundbreaking segment of riding is just a taste of what Esperanto brought to the table. Check out the full film on TGR’s website.
Runtime: 4 minutes
