Bike Computers at the Tour de France 2021

With Tour de France looming, many fans are probably asking,

What are the bike computers the 23 participating teams will be using?

In the past decade, the bike computer does more than just capturing speed and distance data. This day, this small yet powerful unit can help riders in navigation, getting alerts, provide a real-time overview of the current climb, act as a pacing tool in combination with a powermeter and heart rate monitor, and more, depending on how it’s being configured.

It’s an open secret among pro cycling that those who fully embrace and utilize all the available technologies will have an upper hand. A good example is the VeloViewer World Tour Package that is used with Garmin bike computers.

For Tour de France 2021, there are five brands of bike computers used. Garmin and Wahoo continue to be the preferred brands with 11 and 8 teams respectively, followed by Taiwanese brand Bryton (2 teams), German powermeter brand SRM (1 team), and up-and-coming Hammerhead with 1 team.

Take note that not all teams are sponsored by the brands. Those who are not sponsored chose to use a certain brand/model based on their own discretion. Head here if you’d like to know our favorite bike computer picks.

The German powermeter pioneer SRM makes up the bike computer brands list for this year. 10 years ago, SRM was the leading brand for bike computers but their influence has faded in recent years, losing ground to Garmin and Wahoo.

The only team to use the SRM PC8 is the current defending champion Tadej Podgacar’s UAE Team Emirates.
