Canadian outfit Vorsprung Suspension believes they can improve the RockShox Pike and Lyrik with their new piston assembly.

When the RockShox Pike was re-launched in 2013, it quickly developed a reputation as the best mid-travel fork on the market. In the intervening years, competitors have largely caught up, but the Pike (and it’s bigger sibling, the Lyrik) remain extraordinarily popular.

So how do you improve on what many would argue is the best pair of suspension forks on the market? If you’re the suspension gurus at Vorsprung, you take a look at rapid advancements in air sleeve technology.

The Luftkappe features a pneumatic top out bumper, instead of a mechanical one, which eliminated knocking.

The Luftkappe features a pneumatic top out bumper, instead of a mechanical one, which is designed to eliminate knocking.

Their newest offering, the Luftklappe (not to be confused with the Luftwaffe, or German air force) is an air piston assembly. It’s designed to keep the seal head in the same location but repositions the positive air chamber. This allows it to function as a sort of token (air chamber spacer), while also making the negative chamber larger. We have asked for a spring chart and/or cutaway and will update when we hear back.

If that sounds like a bunch of hooey, you’re not wrong. Basically, the new air spring allows you to run less initial air pressure while still achieving the same sag. According to Vorsprung, the benefits include a coil-like feel, increased sensitivity, improved mid-stroke support, and reduced hand fatigue. Sounds like a laundry list of awesome? Retail is an incredibly reasonable $64.

If you’re comfortable rebuilding your suspension, the upgrade is relatively easy. For those who would rather have a professional do the work, Vorsprung will perform a full factory service, piston install, and custom compression/rebound revalve for $210. A regular service, plus Luftkappe install will set you back $175.
