Update: June 21, 2017

We’re updating this article with the arrival of the Silky Katanaboy 500. This is a massive hand saw that measures 52 inches long and part of the Katanaboy line that sports an even longer 650mm model as well. Retailing for $257, this is the saw that can take on serious trail clearing work.

It comes with it's own ninja style carrying case and measures 26 inches when folded.

So we quickly rode to the forest to take on the fallen logs that ‘needed a chainsaw’ and went to work. We encountered a hard wood tree on one pictured above and it was a bit of work. Blade was thin and did not get hung up but it was long enough that focus had to be maintained to keep it straight. Handle was incredible and it was comfortable for getting leverage and pulling force into the saw. It does require a lot of room to operate so one has to select a clear area to operate the saw.

Bikes are getting bigger, and so should our saws. :)

We got it done indeed and tackled three more problem areas in the trail. One thing to watch out for is these saws can tackle big trees so extra care has to be taken to ensure the trees are stable and not under tension that can release when cut.

PocketBoy and BigBoy

PocketBoy and BigBoy are good representatives of the line.

As stewards of the trail, it is our duty to clear the trail of debris and not just ride it. One of the most effective tools we discovered this season are Silky saws from Japan. They’re not cheap but they’re definitely a good value with insightful design and high quality construction.

We tried three models and each delivered good performance for specific size and budget requirements. And the great news is there’s about 40 more models they produce if none of these fit your needs. Press play to learn more.
