Spank Industries all in on shot peening

2017 Sea Otter Classic

Spank Industries Bars

Spank’s line of alloy bars and stems get a make-over for 2017, dropping the previous polished finish in favor of shot peening.

Spank Industries is known for their line of durable alloy components intended for trail and gravity riders. Unlike many other component manufacturers that have utilized carbon fiber for flagship level products, Spank limits their manufacturing to alloy blends, as they feel it to be a safer, more affordable, environmentally friendly alternative.

For 2017, they’ve abandoned their previous polished component aesthetic and adopted something new. Following extensive lab testing which paired shot peen versus polished finish, Spank determined shot peening to be significantly stronger. A cold working process that strengthens and relieves stress points in components, the shot peen finish compacts the outer surface of the material, eliminating potential stress risers, increasing fatigue life and durability as well as overall strength. It also adds UV and scratch resistance.

After investing the necessary tooling needed to perform the shot peening process in house, they’ve discontinued offering bars and stems using a polished finish, with all product in the 2017 catalog now only offered in the shot peened finish. Bar pricing starts at $49 for the dirt jump/ freeride inspired Spoon series, to $99 for the Spike and Oozy Trail Vibrocore bars that feature Spank’s innovative foam core damping.

Spank Industries Oozy Trail Wheels

Spank’s Oozy Trail wheels are offered in 27.5 and 29er with three different internal rim widths, boost and non-boost spacing.

Ranging from the old standard to the plus friendly 395+ wheels, the 295 wheelset features a 24.5mm internal width and a 1900 gram (27.5) /1970 gram (29er) claimed weight. The 345 has a 30mm internal width and listed weights of 2000 grams (27.5) / 2070 grams (29). The 395+ has a 35mm internal width and is listed at 2080 grams (27.5) / 2170 grams (29).
