Suntour was at the Sea Otter Classic showing a cool, new fork based on their popular Axon Werx platform but for kids. The popularity of real mountain bikes for kid’s is evident by how popular our round-up of kids mountain bikes at Sea Otter was.

Suntour is addressing the all too common problem of kids forks not having any real usable suspension for light weight riders. Push down on the suspension fork of almost any current kids bike and you’ll find that there is very little cush even under your adult weight. If you can barely make the fork move, how much is it really going to help your junior rider?

Enter the Suntour Axon Werx 20″. In their own words, they took the “multiple World Cup and London gold winning AXON WERX platform, shrunk it down and tuned it for the groms that want to go hard. Its light, stiff, easy to tune easy to service and most of all it performs to the same world cup level as its big brothers.”

Suntour is quick to point out that this fork will appeal to the “bike geek parent” as well as the groms themselves.

The features of the Suntour Axon Werx 20″ kid’s fork are:

  • weight: 3.0 Lbs , 1360grams (uncut steerer)
  • lowers: Carbon with Magnesium Dropouts
  • stanchions: 32mm alloy
  • crown: Hollow Forged with Alloy Steerer
  • travel: 80mm
  • axle: 15 QLC2 Ti Thru axle system
  • damper: LO- R fully sealed cartridge damper
  • spring: Air Spring with coil negative (adjustable air volume system)
  • (tuned for lightweight riders)

SR Suntour Sales and Marketing Director, Dan Dacko explains the process, “the AXON WERX platform has carbon lowers with magnesium dropouts, we made a 20” jig to cut the lowers, shortened the cartridge and created a negative spring for light riders. SR SUNTOUR makes the majority of the parts so we can make small runs in house for these projects. A benefit for sure.”

These forks will be on Suntour’s Demo tour this year along with a few Spawn Cycles Kotori bikes. For more information about how to obtain a very limited production AXON WERX 20” suspension fork, contact: sales@USULCORP.com. How much will one of these bad boys set you back? With carbon lowers, Ti axle and “big boy” parts, the price is not meant for bargain bikes or bargain seeking parents. The U.S. retail is $850. Not cheap, but then again – isn’t junior worth it?
