Sea Otter: MRP shows new AMG chainguide, Wave chainring
Co-molded rubber in the guide is designed for quieter operation.
Mountain Racing Products (better known as MRP) is doing everything in its power to assure your chain stays where it’s supposed to be. At last weekend’s Sea Otter Classic, the Grand Junction, Colorado-based company had two new offerings on display, its revised AMG chain guide and its new Wave chainring. Here’s a look at all the pertinent details.
AMG Chain Guide
The second generation of this popular enduro-oriented guide offers lower weight (110 grams for the alloy model) and quieter operation thanks to co-molded rubber inside the upper guide channel. The integrated skid plate has been updated to better interface with smaller chainrings used with 1×10 and 1×11 drivetrains. Weight has also been removed from the backing plate, which is part of the reason why it’s become the choice of riders on the Giant’s pro enduro race team. MSRP is $120 for the alloy model, and $170 for carbon fiber.

The new chainring will be offered in direct mount, 104bcd, and 110bcd versions.
Wave Chainring
Meet MRP’s take on the thick-thin ring. But instead of simply copying what SRAM has been doing for a few years, MRP opted for a patent pending wave pattern it says is more durable and does a better job of shedding mud. The wave pattern, says MRP, shifts from one side to the other, which allows the ring to occupy the width of the chain while riding in the rollers, but also clear mud and not derail. Initially the Wave Ring will be offered in direct mount for SRAM for $80. In June, MRP is planning to add 104bcd and 110bcd for $50. Direct mount will be available in 28t-36t versions, 104bcd goes from 30t-38t, while the 110bcd spacing will cover 38t-42t. There’s also talk of a 26-tooth version, but MRP is still testing materials because of the durability issues associated with smaller chainrings, which typically wear down quicker because of the lower tooth count.
