Rowdy the Clown joins the Red Bull Crashed Ice circus in St. Paul

Dressed in full race regalia, Rowdy the Clown prepares to take a practice run on the treacherous Red Bull Crashed Ice course aboard his Borealis fat bike.

You may remember our friend Rowdy the Clown from the fatbike drifting video we posted of him last week. Not one to sit still, Rowdy took his act on the road to the icy slopes of the Red Bull Crashed Ice course in St. Paul, Minn., competing in an exhibition bike race between heats of the downhill ice cross skating competition last weekend.

Rowdy, along with mountain bike legend Richie Schley, BMX stud Zak Earley, and local fat bike ripper Matt Ford took to the steep, slippery 400-meter course set alongside the Mississippi River with more than 120,000 fans looking on.

From the start things looked good for Rowdy as he trailed Earley by a small margin for the first quarter of the course. Earley aboard his 20-inch BMX bike began pulling away, however, as Rowdy—resplendent in his clown shoes and full costume—took the course’s 180-degree turn wide. It also opened up the door for Ford, also on a fatbike, to catch up. Schley, meanwhile struggled to find traction with his standard-width mountain bike tires.

As Earley powered away from the field, Ford cleaned-out Rowdy, chopping his front wheel and throwing the clown to the ice. By the time Rowdy recovered, Schley had found some traction and passed to take third. Rowdy powerslid his bike across the line a few seconds later to the cheers of the Twin Cities crowd.

Rowdy the Clown, whose real name is Ali Goulet is a former pro snowboarder, a former cyclocross national champ, and race promoter of the Enduro Cup race series. Though he may have finished last, clearly the guy knows how to have a good time.
