When SRAM introduced XX1, their first 11-speed drivetrain, it allowed many riders to free themselves from the front derailleur. The massive 10-42 cassette offered the range most users needed for tackling all but the steepest of terrain, but came at a price many could not justify.

Over the succeeding years, a slew of aftermarket products have been released to expanded the versatility of existing 10-speed drivetrains, which has allowed many to experience the wonders of a 1x drivetrains, but at a fraction of the cost.

While SRAM now offers its 11-speed drivetrains at a number of price points, this hasn’t halted the innovations from third party manufacturers. The newest of which is an 11-speed shifter adapter from South African brand Rapidé. This $12 component replaces the stock 10-speed selector in your existing shifter with an 11-speed part that’s cut from hardened steel.

It is currently available for the following models:

  • X7 or X9 10-speed shifter, pre-2014
  • XO pre-2014
  • X7/X9/X0, post 2014

The entire conversion process takes roughly 20 minutes and appears to be fairly straightforward. We certainly can’t promise the system will shift as flawlessly as a new 11- speed drivetrain, but for $12, shipping, and the cost a new cassette, it could be worth a try.

If you know how to change shifter cable, this mod shouldn’t be too difficult.
