Race Face Turbine R Wheelset and Vault Hub roll out
Race Face has been on a roll in recent years with a number of hit products, including lightweight cranks and soft goods. Their latest offering is a new wheelset, the Turbine R with Vault hub.
The hub features an oversized shell that Race Face claims offers a 20% increase in rear drive torsional stiffness, as well as improved lateral stiffness. Inside, there is a 60T drive ring with 6 pawls. Each pawl has two teeth and they’re arranged so that two of the three pawls are offset, resulting in 3 degrees engagement or 120 total points of engagement.

The hubs spin on large 6902 bearings, which have been spaced widely apart (70.4mm to be exact) to increase durability. The entire mechanism is protected from the elements by low-drag labyrinth seals. Two versions of the hubset will be available, one that is compatible (and interchangeable) with the existing 142 standard, and of course a boost version.
These hubs can be found in the new Tubrine R wheelset, which uses a 30mm wide asymmetric rim made from 6069 aluminum that’s 40% stronger than standard 6061, claims Race face. They also say that this stronger alloy offers improved durability at the bead hook and allows them to trim any excess material from the design, which results in a 460g 27.5 rim.
The wheelset will be available in 27.5” and 29”. The 27.5” version has a claimed weight of 1730g; the 29” comes in at 1815g. Internal rim width is 30mm, rim height is 20mm, and the have 28 spokes front and rear that are offset by 4.5mm to improve wheel stiffness. Retail price for the wheelset is $1200, or you can buy the front ($480) or rear ($640) separately.
