POC Coron Air Carbon SPIN helmet debuts
Created with technology and input from its professional riders and teams, POC has launched the Coron Air Carbon SPIN. The Swedish protection specialists are call the new brain protector a highly ventilated and lightweight DH and enduro specific full-face helmet. The multi-impact helmet was designed for competition level performance and is certified for downhill racing.
Maximizing the ventilation channels and using carbon to produce a lightweight full-face helmet were important drivers in developing this high-performance helmet. Likewise, POC wanted to ensure that the helmet offers enhanced protection against both linear and oblique impacts. To do this they built the helmet with an EPP multi impact liner and an oblique impact protection system dubbed SPIN.
Ventilation
The Coron Air Carbon SPIN features a ventilation system that guides air through and out of the helmet via 20 ventilation ports and a host of internal channels, which are all linked to produce enhanced levels of ventilation, claims POC. The design has been optimized to work at both low and high speeds and is ideal for all day use, especially for DH racing, bike park laps, enduro stages, and long transfers or hot days on the bike.
Safety
Working with medical experts in the POC lab, the company says it knew that oblique impacts were common and can cause serious head injury due to a rotation of the helmet and head. To counter these oblique impacts, POC created SPIN pads, which are designed to provide oblique impact protection based on their location inside the helmet. The objective is to minimize the effects of an oblique fall by allowing the helmet to move relative to the head. In addition, the downhill certified helmet is built around an EPP multi-impact liner to ensure a high level of protection against a multitude of impact scenarios.
Weight
The Coron Air Carbon SPIN has been developed for racing, all-day use, to be light, ventilated and as safe as possible. Weighing in at 1070g it is a light full-face suited to all day use, going up and down a mountain.
Performance
To complete a high performance and versatile helmet the Coron Air Carbon SPIN also features emergency removable cheek pads for added security in the case of a head or neck injury. Also the ear chambers have been designed to reduce any negative effect on balance and hearing, and the chin bar is constructed for both protection and breathing. Finally, there’s a break away visor designed to break off in the case of an impact to protect the user’s head and neck
The entire range of Coron Air SPIN helmets have also been optimized to work with POC’s new mountain bike goggle, the Ora, which uses POC’s new lens technology that’s cheekily dubbed, clarity. “We have developed Clarity with industry leaders, Carl Zeiss, to provide unique, highly tuned lenses that have light frequencies created for specific activities and environments and which will provide enhanced contrast and light,” said POC CEO Jonas Sjögren. “Better vision will support performance and faster reactions, but Clarity can also improve everyone’s safety and ability to react to dangers.”
Price of the Coron Air Carbon SPIN is $450. The Coron Air SPIN sells for $275. The Ora Clarity goggles are $90, while the standard Ora goggles run $70.
