NAHBS 2015: Eclectic mountain bikes highlight show
The small but mighty group of mountain bikes at NAHBS was an eclectic mix of old and new. The show included the return of a legendary steel builder, new carbon mountain bike layups, and everything in between. While the number of mountain bikes may have been low, the level of quality was sky high.
Alchemy Bicycle Company
Alchemy’s handmade carbon frames certainly stuck out in the sea of titanium and steel bikes at NAHBS. Alchemy’s carbon hard tail 29er was especially revered due to the innovative new molding processes developed specifically for this bike. Using trapped rubber molding, Alchemy builders created a durable and great riding frame that weighs in at only 1,100 grams.
Sleek internal routing options make for a clean build.

Black Cat Bicycles
Based out of Santa Cruz, California, Black Cat Bicycles embodies the laid back attitude of this small surf town. The curved seat tube wraps around the rear wheel creating a laid back feel to the bike. However, with Santa Cruz’s world-renowned mountain bike trails just out the door from Black Cat’s shop, this mountain bike is sure to rip.
Small but interesting additions like this dual tubed stem make Black Cat’s bike stand out. With a two-year waiting list, Black Cat bikes were some of the most sought-after at the show.
