Lazer’s new Revolution and Roller helmets for 2016
Lazer Sport was at the recent Winter Bike Press Camp events showing a selection of new helmets for 2016. New for this year is the all mountain styled Revolution with deeper coverage and removable ear pieces, the budget conscious Roller and an update to the Magma helmet now with a MIPs option.
Lazer Revolution – Enduro style lid with plenty of options
The Revolution is an all new all mountain/enduro style helmet that is all about options. On top, there is a mount (called SMS for Safety Mounting System) for installing a GoPro or night riding lights. We got the word about the Revolution straight from Lazer’s chief PR Helmeteer – Chris Smith, “Lazer submitted these helmets for CPSC testing WITH the accessories mounted, which is different from how other manufacturers test. Whereas on other brands, if you strap a light or camera on top, you might void your warranty, the Revolution passes the drop test certification with the accessories mounted. It is also designed to break away in a crash so it is less of a snag hazard.”
Another interesting feature of the Revolution is the removable side ear pieces, made for additional protection. This helmet is made to be adaptable for whatever kind of riding you are doing, whether it is a full on Enduro race or just some mellow trail riding. Don’t need that much coverage? The side ear pieces snap in and out so you get just the amount of coverage you need. Also, hidden underneath the panels are three threaded holes that will be for the upcoming optional chin guard accessory, that screws in (and will be fully certified for UCI DH racing).
There are two different visor options (short and long) and the visor itself has a 5 positions ratchet adjustment to provide plenty of goggle clearance. The Revolution also features Lazer’s Advanced Turnfit System which provides easy adjustment for a comfortable fit. This helmet also has 23 vents, weighs 340 grams (size MD w/o side ear pods), is available in 3 sizes (S/M/L) and seven color options.
The Revolution will be available March 1 with an MSRP of $160. The MIPs (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) equipped version will be available April 1 with an MSRP of $190. The Lazer Revolution FF (Full Face) is currently expected to debut at the Sea Otter Classic in April.
Lazer Roller – solid features at an affordable price
The Roller is an all new helmet for 2016 and is a good all-around helmet. Its good ventilation means it will work as an XC lid, but with extended coverage. It can also double as a commuter helmet with the optional LED blinky light that fits right into the snap in mud cap (for an upcharge). The rear-facing red LED has two modes (steady-on or blink) for those times when being seen is important.
When we asked Smith if the MIPs versions (MIPs helps protect against rotational brain injury) are out selling the non-MIPs version, he stated, “The MIPs version is selling well for our higher end helmets. But for their kid’s helmets and some of our lower priced models, buyers tend to be more price conscious and are not as willing to pay for the extra protection.” This statement surprises us, since you would think that parents out there would not want to spare any expense when it comes to their young one’s brains. However, the extra $20 to $35 makes a bigger percentage difference when you are paying $80 versus $180.
The Roller also features Lazer’s TS+ Turnfit System retention which provides easy adjustment for a comfortable fit. This helmet also has 28 vents, weighs 230 grams (size MD), is available in 3 sizes (S/M/L) and five color options (Matte Black Titanium is shown here).
The Roller will be available mid-February with an MSRP of $85 and $105 for the MIPs version.
Lazer Magma – XC oriented helmet with aero/rain shell option
The Magma is a lighter XC style helmet that is unchanged for this year with the exception of the MIPs option. It features the ARS (Advanced Rollsys System) for ease of adjustment with good comfort. There is also an optional aero/rain shell cover that is a side effect of the Magma being the twin sister of the Lazer road model called the Blade. Like the Roller above, there is also a rear LED blinky light option on the Magma. This helmet has 22 vents, weighs 230 grams (size MD), and comes in 3 sizes (S/M/L) and seven colors. The standard version is available now with an MSRP of $105 and the forthcoming MIPs version will be $140.
