Jeff Lenosky Trail Boss Series heads to Colorado
Check out the latest video from Jeff Lenosky’s Trail Boss Series, this time coming to you from just outside Lyons, Colorado. In this episode, Lenosky heads to Hall Ranch to try to master the trail system’s tough front side rock garden.
“I had been hearing lots of great stories about Hall Ranch and the Bitterbrush Trail so I decided to check it out for my latest episode of Trail Boss,” Lenosky explained. “One of the things I loved about this trail aside from the technicality of the climb was the unlimited options you have on the way up. Most of the sections in the rock garden are fairly wide and all rock, so you can make the trail easier or harder depending on your ability.”
During this ride, Lenosky was rolling on a set of Vittoria Deamion 27.5 wheels wrapped with Martello tires. Press play to see how Lenosky and his equipment faired.

Now that you’ve watched the video, here are Lenosky’s top three tips for tackling technical climbs.
1. Pace yourself: You never want to go too hard on really technical climbs because when you have to dig a little deeper to make a crux move, you need to have something left in the tank.
2. Gear up: Choose a slightly harder gear than what you would use to spin out, but nothing you need to stand to turn. You want to be able to float over the seat, so choose something you can still turn while sitting on the smooth sections but that has some drive when you attack out of the saddle over the rough stuff.
3. Gain momentum: Pick up speed when you can, not just when you need it. If there’s a smooth patch before a tech section, use it to carry speed into the rough stuff rather than try to find it once you’re in the thick of it.
A veteran rider with a 20-year professional career and three Observed Trials U.S. National Championships to his name, Lenosky uses his skills to ride the unrideable in Trail Boss. When you ride an entire trail you may feel like a Boss, but without the proper skills Mother Nature can quickly remind you who’s really in charge. This video series explores some of the most technical trials around and provides tips so you can become a Trail Boss, too.
