Review: iSSi Trail and Trail Triple clipless pedals
More. I always want more. More reliability, more affordability, more fit options, more colors. Thankfully I’m not alone. This creates opportunity for companies like iSSi pedals, a Quality Bicycle Products brand (sister to Salsa, Surly, All-City, Jagwire, 45Nrth, Foundry, etc.) launched a couple years ago, to offer a wide variety of clipless pedals for those of us who want more.
While iSSi offers several road and mountain bike models, I’ve spent the last two months riding both the brand’s off-road Trail and Trail Triple models. The affordable $100 Trail model is offered in a rainbow of colors, eight in total with several high-vis options as well as classic black and silver. The Trail pedal uses a chromoly steel axle, aluminum pedal body, sealed cartridge bearing and a bushing.
The Trail model is also a bike fitter’s delight with +6mm and +12mm spindle options, as well as standard 52.5-millimeter length. This is more useful than you might imagine. For fat bikers using insulated riding shoes it is often necessary to use washers to clear the crank arms. For people with wide hips or those of us who ride duck foot, a longer spindle can help with alignment. I rode a pair of hi-vis yellow Trail pedals with the +6mm axles. The pair weighed 420 grams without cleats.
The $120 Trail Triple version costs an extra $20 and that pays for an extra sealed cartridge bearing inside the pedal body. Though the extra bearing adds 6 grams to a pair of pedals it should also make for a longer life and smoother running. Out of the box, the Triple version spun more freely than that standard model. Unlike the standard version of the Trail pedal, the Triple is not compatible with the longer spindle options. It too is offered in a wide variety of colors, the same as the standard model. Both the Trail and Trail Triple utilize a mud-shedding casting for the pedal body and the same engagement mechanism.
