Interbike 2015: Fat bike maker Borealis unveils Crestone, Flume, and new carbon wheel

The Fat Bike Company, better known as the people behind Colorado-based Borealis, is on a roll. The company recently completed a move into a new spacious 11,000 square foot facility in Colorado Springs, which will support its expanding in-house engineering, production, and sales departments. It also has a host of new products that it was showing off at last week’s Interbike trade show in Las Vegas. Here’s what you need to know.
Borealis Crestone Frame
The Crestone is a new “state-of-the-art” carbon fiber fat bike frame that continues to “demonstrate Borealis’ commitment to providing fat bike enthusiasts with the industry’s most cutting edge equipment to ensure they have the very best carbon fiber fat bikes available,” said Steve Kaczmarek, company Founder and CEO.
Borealis says it challenged staffers to utilize an entirely new computer generated design process, which helped reduce waste in manufacturing along with reduction of the frame’s weight. The development team took months to test the frame and invested countless hours to ensure they got the geometry just right.
The bike is touted as being 150 grams lighter than Echo, Borealis’ first carbon framed fat bike.
The Crestone will be available for purchase through dealers and distributors in early fall. Features include:
- Designed with new strength standards
- New hard tail design
- 150 grams lighter than Echo
- Available with new graphics
- Built with advanced carbon materials and resins
- Reduced stand over height
- Complete builds with SRAM XO1 ($5150) or XX1 ($6050)

Borealis Flume Frame
The new Flume is an aluminum frame outfitted with high end carbon bars, seatpost post and fork. Complete bikes will start shipping to dealers and distributors in early October. Features include:
- Aluminum frame with smooth welding
- Proprietary new hard tail design
- SRAM GX components
- Borealis carbon post, bar and fork
- Upgrade option to Lauf or Bluto fork
- New graphics
- MSRP: $2400
The new wheel utilizes a 32-hole rim with double wall construction and has 80mm/85mm internal/external width.
Borealis Elite Carbon Wheel
Borealis also debuted a new carbon fat bike wheel, the Elite, that was made in partnership with Reynolds. The new hoops will come spec’d on some Borealis bike builds, and can be purchased after market. Features include:
- Built for year round riding
- Easy tubeless set-up
- 32-hole rim with double wall construction
- 80mm/85mm internal/external width
- Available as rim only or with Industry Nine hubs
- Complete builds start at $2300
