Holiday Gift Guide 2013: For The Tech Geek Rider
Part of mountain biking is getting away from it all…the hustle and bustle, the noise, the stress. Enjoying nature in its pure, unsullied peacefulness. But for some of us, we can’t help but drag our inner geek along with us…recording our escapades and capturing our efforts to relive and relish with the rest of the world. If you have someone on your list like this (or if this person is you), we have compiled this list of gift suggestions for the Tech Geek mountain biker.
Wahoo Fitness RFLKT+
The RFLKT+ from Wahoo Fitness is an iPhone powered bike computer for your handlebars that connects to your favorite apps and sends the data direct to your handlebars. This way, you can save your battery and keep your phone safely tucked away. We have been using the RFLKT+ and we really enjoy its sleek profile and robust features.
MSRP: $149.99

Lezyne CNC Digital Drive Floor Pump
The Lezyne Digital Drive is a new high pressure floor pump that has a digital gauge on it that makes telling exactly how much pressure you have a snap. It features full CNC-machined aluminum construction for a durable and lightweight design and it looks really slick. We have been using this pump for a few weeks now and it is easily one of our favorite floor pumps. If you are in a hurry, be sure to use the included Speed Chuck for easy on and off.
MSRP: $129.99

Garmin Edge 500
Even though it is not the latest and greatest model, the Garmin Edge 500 GPS based bike computer is smaller, sleeker, cheaper and has better reviews on our site than the higher end Garmin 810. As an older model, it can be found significantly cheaper than it’s full MSRP. Garmin is one of the oldest names in the GPS business and the Edge 500 provides an excellent interface and accuracy.
MSRP: $249.99

GoPro Hero 3+
The GoPro Hero 3+ placed very highly in the image quality category of the Mtbr POV Camera Shootout. We have used most of the action cameras on the market today and the GoPro Hero3+ really delivers. As an added bonus, it is available in 3 different versions to accommodate almost any holiday budget. If image quality is your highest priority in an action camera, you won’t be disappointed with the GoPro Hero3+.
MSRP: White Edition $199.99 – Silver Edition $299.99 – Black Edition $399.99

Stages Cycling Power Meter
If your needs for stats and measurements go beyond the usual speed, distance, elevation and heart rate, a power meter may be what you are looking for. Stages Cycling makes a mountain bike friendly version that is durable, accurate and cheaper than most of the competition. Best of all, the Stages Cycling Power Meter is designed and assembled in Boulder, CO USA.
MSRP: From $700

Strava
Although it can be a controversial service, Strava is an app for your smart phone that tracks your ride data. It is available for iPhone and android and the app itself is free. Even if you aren’t the kind of rider who can compete for KOMs (King Of the Mountain records), the app provides valuable and interesting data and allows you to share that information with your riding buddies. If you really dig the free app, Strava offers a premium membership that offer more features (suffer score, power analysis, goals performance, real time analysis and more) for a yearly subscription. It is the Facebook of ride data sharing.
MSRP: Available as a FREE app or Premium Membership costs $59 per year
