Help build trail — and enter to win Yeti SB5 frame

Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association Raffle

The newly launched Crested Butte Conservation Corps has been hard at work all summer making sure epic rides like the Crystal Peak Trail stay epic.

A few weeks back we told you about the ongoing initiative to build more trails at Mtbr HQ West in Santa Cruz, California — and how you could enter to win an Ibis mountain bike while supporting that effort.

Now it’s time to shine a light on what’s going on in the greater Crested Butte area — and let you know you could win a new Yeti SB5 frame, while pitching in on the effort to maintain and build more trail in the Colorado mountain bike Mecca (aka Mtbr’s Rocky Mountain testing HQ).

Imagine getting to build this rock smasher up as your new ride.

The raffle is being put on by the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, the oldest fat tire advocacy club in the world. Every time you kick $10 into the kitty, you’ll get a chance to take home a sweet Yeti frame, a custom pair of Romp alpine skis, or a two-night stay at the Mountain Chalet in Aspen courtesy of the Cristiana Guesthaus. The winners will be decided at the annual Epic Dope Ride/Volunteer Party on September 16. But you do not need to be present to win and you can enter as many times as you like.

For the uninitiated, CBMBA has been around since 1983 doing all it can to maintain the roughly 450 miles of singletrack that make Crested Butte one of the world’s best places to ride a mountain bike. This year, they’ve taken things a step further, helping launch the Crested Butte Conservation Corps, a full time trail crew tasked with minimizing impacts, protect resources, and being on-the-ground stewards for all the area’s singletrack and surrounding environment.

Already the impact of this effort has been profound. Instead of relying solely on volunteers to do things like cut out downed trees or mitigate poor trail drainage, the CBCC has been rapidly dispatched to trouble areas, assuring the best possible backcountry experience for all trail users. On the ground conditions and observations can be made directly to the trail crew via crestedbuttemountainbike.com/trail-information/observations, meaning resource damage and impacts can be addressed and tended to quickly, preventing further damage.

The CBCC has also been working with partner groups and organizations throughout the area to mitigate impacts, manage use, and maintain general ecosystem health. That’s meant everything from picking up trash and handing out dog poop bags, to putting signs up at trailheads and helping educate trail users on proper outdoors etiquette. It’s an exceptionally progressive program that can serve as a model for other areas across the U.S. and beyond.

Of course funding a program such as this takes money, both now and in the future, which is why we at Mtbr strongly encourage you to pull the trigger on at least a couple CBMBA raffle tickets — or even sign up for an annual membership. Because even if you don’t live in Crested Butte or plan to ride there anytime soon, supporting initiatives like the CBCC is critical to making sure that amazing, well-maintained riding locales are always here for you — and future generations.
