Review: FOX Fork Air Volume Spacer
The bike market has recently been flooded by a slew of extremely capable short travel 29ers. These bikes climb well and are incredibly fun when barreling downhill. The problem is that these frames are designed with more XC or trail oriented pursuits in mind, so it’s easy to override the suspension.
In order to prevent harsh bottom outs when crushing rock gardens, there are several ways to tune your suspension via built-in adjustments. For instance, you could run less sag and sacrifice small bump compliance, or try running the suspension in “middle” mode. Both of these methods work to a certain extent, but we’ve found a better method is using Air Volume Spacers.
An Air Volume Spacer can be inserted in your fork to adjust your air volume, which affects the middle of the stroke and bottom out resistance. By adding spacers you can make the suspension more progressive as you move through the travel, which is ideal for heavier or more aggressive riders. Removing spacers has the opposite effect and allows the fork to move more easily through its travel. This is beneficial for lighter weight riders, who would otherwise struggle to utilize full travel.
