First Look: Wolf Tooth Components DropStop Chainrings, Rotor Truing Bottle Opener

Wolf Tooth Components may not be a household name, but they get referenced frequently in Mtbr’s forums as a go-to source of drop-resistant narrow-wide chainrings for 1x setups. They recently sent us a care package with a pair of their made-in-the-USA DropStop single chainrings–one 32-tooth 104BCD, another 32-tooth direct-mount for SRAM GXP–as well as sets of their tidy chainring bolts, and a bottle opener that doubles as a rotor truing tool. We’ll be putting it all through the paces in the next few months, but suffice it to say our initial impressions are quite good–the CNC machining and anodizing looks top notch.

Wolf Tooth’s direct mount chainrings work on removable-spider cranks and replace both the stock chainring and spider for a lighter, stronger setup. Ours is for SRAM GXP cranks, but they make specific versions for SRAM BB30 cranks, as well as a Specialized S-works and Lightning crankset version.

Wolf Tooth’s 7076-T5 aluminum chainring fasteners eschew the less-than-ideal slotted nut for a system that combines a 5mm front-side allen bolt with a 6mm back-side allen nut. This system ensures tight installation and helps prevent shredded knuckles.

We rarely meet a bottle opener we don’t like, but Wolf Tooth’s is something special. In addition to liberating beverages from their vessels, the opener includes a clever slot for truing disc brake rotors. Wolf Tooth recommends using caution when using the functions in close succession, and discourages employing the opener on what they call “crap beer.”

Wolf Tooth offers their wares in anodized black, silver, red, blue and green. Chainrings are available in two-tooth increments from 30-38 teeth in a number of bolt patterns for mountain bike and cyclocross use.

Not to be outdone for mega-low gearing, Woolf Tooth will be offering a 42-tooth rear cog retrofit in February.
