First Look: New Niner ROS 9 Plus – Big wheels get bigger

Niner ROS 9 Plus

Spotted at the Bike Press Camp event in Park City, UT today, this is the brand new Niner ROS 9 Plus. It is the “big brother” of the ROS 9 but with bigger wheels…it is what you would get if you crossed a 29er with a fat bike.

Niner is remaining tight-lipped about the details of this bike until its official launch at the upcoming IMBA World Summit in Steamboat Springs, CO August 20-24. It appears to be made from the same 4130 cro-moly as the ROS 9 and has the same oversized headtube, Bio-Centric II bottom bracket system, same seat tube bend, top tube gusset, in-board rear caliper placement and weld construction. The rigid, tapered steel fork is new, however.

The geometry also looks identical to the rally-ish ROS 9. This is an interesting take on the 29+ movement started by Surly when they released the Krampus. In fact, the Niner ROS 9 Plus features the same Surly Knard tires as the Krampus in 29×3″ size. Other parts and highlights include:

  • Niner tapered steel rigid fork
  • Niner RDO seat post
  • Niner carbon handlebar, Niner grips
  • Niner Trail stem
  • Avid Trail 9 disc brakes (180mm front, 160mm rear rotors)
  • SRAM X01/X1 drivetrain (10-42 11-speed cassette)
  • Stan’s NoTubes Hugo 29+rim
  • Surly Knard 29×3″ tires

Since this bike was featured in the Stan’s NoTubes suite here at Bike Press Camp, we should also give you information about the all new Hugo 52 plus size rim. The Hugo rim is 52mm wide on the outside and 49.9mm wide on the inside. It weighs 630 grams and is drilled for Shraeder valves for ease of inflation. It features a double wall section in the middle and it has independent drop channels on each side for easy inflation and mounting. MSRP for the rim only is $145 and Stan’s will also be offering the Hugo 52 as a complete wheelset. The Hugo’s are not limited to 29er, as they will also be available in 27.5 and 26″ version later this year.
