ENVE rims go big with new M60 Plus
The new M60 Plus is light enough for long days and big climbs, but strong enough to get rowdy.
As bike manufacturers have begun to release more plus sized models, rim manufacturers have answered the call with ever increasing rim widths. The latest brand to join the fray is ENVE composites, who manufacturers their line of carbon rims entirely in the United States.
The M60 plus has a 40mm internal width and is designed for use with 2.8-3″ tires.
Their latest is the M60 Plus. ENVE uses a naming system that indicates a ratio between climbing and descending. Their 50 fifty wheels are designed for XC racing, while the 90 ten series is built to withstand the abuse of DH laps. The M60 platform is light enough for long days and big climbs, yet sturdy enough for rowdy descents.
For now, this rim is only available in 27.5″, but a 29″ version is in the works.
Until now, it had been available in two different widths.The standard version which is ideal for tires between 2-2.3” and an HV (high volume) variant for tires between 2.3-2.4”. The new Plus model has a 40mm internal diameter and is designed for use with tires between 2.8” and 3”. It’s only available in a 27.5” version currently, but a 29” rim is also in development.
The carbon layup, hookless bead, and rim depth have all been optimized to reduce pinch flats.
In addition to the larger internal diameter, this rim differs from others in the M60 series due to the shape of the hookless bead. According to ENVE, manufacturers of tires have been able to bring down the weight of plus options by using less protective casings. This compromise means plus tires are more vulnerable to pinch flatting, so the Utah-based company modified their hookless beads to be less sharp. They also adjusted layup to be more compliant. These changes are claimed to improve ride quality and reduce pinch flats, while still offering the best impact resistance and lateral stiffness of any rim in the M60 series.
Each M60 Plus rim retails for $975. Wheelsets start at $2,718.
The claimed production weight for this impressive bit of carbon is 455 grams, which we’re told is class leading. The price of admission? $975 a rim. Prices for a complete wheelset starts at $2,718 for DT Swiss 240 hubs and tops out at $2,900 for Kings.
