Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader

Will the Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader be the answer to your flat tire problems.

Tire inserts have been one of the hottest product category of 2018, with companies big and small jumping into the emerging flat protection space. The latest entrant comes from Italy’s Effetto Mariposa, which has launched Tyreinvader. Press play to see the Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader installation process.

Among the top line pitches include lower weight. Other inserts on the market can weigh as much as 300 grams per wheel, and this added rotational weight is obviously the worst kind of weight. Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader is claimed to start at 50g per wheel and top out at 92g depending on model chosen. There are four different sizes, which correspond to the width of your tire. Listed weights are for 29er set-ups, so if you’ll shed even more heft if you’re running 27.5 wheels. As you can see in the image below, Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader has a smaller footprint, which presumably contributes to the majority of the weight savings.

Some of this weight is lost through tire sealant, as Effetto Mariposa admits that because inserts have surfaces that are wetted by the sealant, a fraction of it won’t be available to move around to do its job. For this reason, they recommend an increase in the quantity of sealant employed by 30 ml.

This set-up runs counter to the vast majority of tire inserts, which take up more space inside the tire’s inner cavity, reducing air volume and the influence on the tire feel of the inflating pressure, as the insert is often compressed during normal riding, not just on heavier hits.

Instead Tyreinvader allows riders to use air pressure as the main parameter to tune tire behavior, though they do say that, “You might still feel Tyreinvader inside your wheels, so a test ride is recommended before you race with it.”

The Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvader is also claimed to lessen the set-up headaches associated with some other tire inserts. They claim that just average mechanics skills are enough to get the job done. Just cut Tyreinvader as needed, join its two ends with the provided zip-ties, mount it inside the tire (it will stretch a little bit to fit the circumference), add sealant, mount your tire, and go ride. It’s also worth noting that Tyreinvader won’t interfere with inflation and thus requires no special tubeless valves.

Effetto Mariposa Tyreinvaders are made of an EVA closed cell polymer that’s commonly used for running shoe soles. This aims to increase shock absorption and be durable. In that event you do suffer a loss of air pressure, Tyreinvader is designed to remain tight on the rim, helping keep the tire on the wheel.

As for the alien-shaped cut-outs, they are designed to save weight and allow easy sealant flow. And they look cool. Price starts at 40 euro per pair, or roughly $46 US. Availability is set for next month.
