You can make a solid argument that bikes such as the Canyon Neuron are the best fit for most riders, splitting the difference between XC and trail.

Canyon has filled a gap in its bike line-up, announcing today the launch of new version of its Neuron (mostly) 29er trail bike, a model that previously was not available in North America. The full carbon Canyon Neuron is aimed at the sweet spot between pure XC racing and long travel trail, checking in with 130mm of travel front and rear, slotting in between the 100mm Canyon Lux XC bike and 150mm Canyon Spectral trail steed.

Headtube angle of the Canyon Neuron is 67.5-degress for the 29er M, L, XL size frames, and 67 for the XS and S options, which sport 27.5 wheels instead of 29er. Seat tube angle is a reasonably steep 74.5 across the board. Chainstay length is 440mm for the larger three frame sizes and 430mm for the XS and S.

As usual prices from the German direct-to-consumer seller are impressive. Available complete bikes in the U.S. will be Neuron CF 8.0 for $3499 with SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain, Neuron CF 9.0 SL for $4799 with SRAM XO Eagle, and the top-of-the-line Canyon Neuron CF 9.0 Unlimited for $6999 with SRAM XX1 and DT Swiss XMC 1200 carbon wheels. Two women-specific builds will also be shipping to U.S. customers — Neuron WMN CF 8.0 with GX Eagle for $2999 and Neuron WMN CF 9.0 with XO Eagle for $3999. Front suspension is Fox 34 with either Rhythm, Performance or Factory trim. Tires are Maxxis Forekaster.

The Canyon Neuron platform also features innovations such as an integrated cable channel, industrial grade long life bearing concept, and an Impact Protection Unit to prevent your levers from smacking the top tube in a crash. Canyon’s Triple Phase Suspension is said to deliver small bump sensitivity, a stable platform for pedaling and pumping out of corners, and a progressive end stroke so you only use the last bit of that 130mm when you absolutely need it. With all that in mind, the Canyon Neuron is billed as a do-it-all bike that can be a anything from a first serious MTB for a beginner to a precision tool for multi-day tours or XC stage races.
