Canfield Crampon Mountain flat pedals first look
Canfield just introduced their latest pedal, the Crampon Mountain. It is the long-awaited follow-up to the very popular Crampon Ultimate.
The new Crampon Mountain shares many of the features that make the existing Crampon Ultimate which is smaller, lighter and sells a the same price of $149. They both use the patented convex shape, ultra-thin 6-millimeter leading edges and double sided pins for easy removal. Combined with a fresh new look, an even larger 112-millimeter by 106-millimeter platform and virtually maintenance free internals that utilizes a bushing at the axle side and stacked bearings at the end internally.
For comparison, the Crampon Ultimate weighs 347 grams compared to the Crampon Mountain’s 397 grams. Also, the Ultimate is smaller at 105 by 105mm in size.
“The Mountain is the culmination of years spent designing and testing flat pedals, and incorporates the best features of the Crampon line,” says Chris Canfield, Canfield Brothers co-owner and designer. “Whether you’re trail riding or downhill racing, there really isn’t a better combination of traction, support and on-the-bike feel—especially in something this thin, durable and low maintenance.”
Starting with the ultra-thin flat pedal in 2011 with the introduction of the Crampon Classic. Canfield took it a step further a year later and created the thin and durable Crampon Ultimate.
Their secret lies in the patented (Patent #D615,003 S), unique convex shape that contours naturally to the foot, aiding in grip and placing your foot as close to the spindle as possible for maximum pedal stroke efficiency, eliminating “dead spots.”
The Ultimate will remain a staple in the Canfield Brothers line in both aluminum and ultra-light magnesium versions for those seeking the thinnest, lightest pedal possible. The Crampon Mountain replaces the Classic as the largest pedal in the line, offering wider platforms and thicker pins for maximum traction and support. Pedals ship without center pins for a more “traditional” feel out of the box, but the center pins can be added for more grip.
The 2016 Crampon Mountain is available in 10 anodized colors now in the official Canfield Brothers webstore and your local bike shop and retails for $149.
