Burley Coho XC bike trailer first look
Burley Coho XC enabled a picnic and RC Crawl session on top of the hill.
When Burley invited us to test their new bike trailer, the Coho XC, we were not that interested. We had visions of troublesome mounting and rear hub compatibility problems with this current crop of rear thru-axles. Much like bike trainers, the bike trailer has been granted an impossible compatibility landscape with skewers, axles, Boost and SuperBoost standards. But they assured us they had a solution for this puzzle so we accepted the challenge.
Over the years, we had dreams of venturing deeper into the trail and doing some overnight camping. Fishing in remote lakes, doing some trail work with real tools have crossed our minds too. And finally, we’ve always entertained the idea of moving our post-ride feast on to the top of the mountain instead of the usual parking lot.

The mounting solution
Built to address one of the most common problems of the bike trailer – the inability to adjust the yoke to a wide range of axles and hubs – the Coho XC uses a variable width yoke. This feature allows installation on a wider range of hubs and tire sizes, including 700C with full wrap fenders, 29 plus wheels, off-road tires and road tires. Boost, Superboost and Fat bike axles have met their match

Users simply spread the yoke to the width of their rear axle, and then drop and lock the trailer to the bike with the new dual ball hitch that allows the yoke to connect at multiple angles.

Our take:
We’ve only used it three times and we’re pretty shocked with how well it works. Mounting and dismounting the trailer takes about 6 seconds each, once the special axle is installed and left on the bike.
Climbing up hills, it is very stable and maneuverable. Added traction on the rear tire gives the bike some climbing prowess as long as the watts are supplied. Descending, it is capable indeed as it can slither through corners and tight spots. We just have to remember to maintain a smooth flow, especially on loose terrain. Hard braking efforts tend to make the heavy trailer push the bike and cause instability.
And handling this trailer, it is built like a fine bike with quality materials, welds, and construction. We feared it would cost $800+ but a quick check of the specs reveals a very fair price of $419. Thumbs up so far and we can’t wait to take it on some big adventures.
