All Mountain / Enduro Helmet Shootout
All Mountain helmets have come of age as a new crop of helmets have been introduced that are more optimized for more aggressive descending and Enduro racing.
First and foremost, there is more coverage. With the new six inch travel bikes approaching the descending ability of downhill bikes from a few years ago, All Mountain riders need more protection, especially at the back of the head.
Visors are a must now too. Instead of big visors that were stuck on as an afterthought, the new visors are more integrated into the design and are adjustable.
An XC/road helmet is on the left compared to an All Mountain helmet on the right.
And of course no one wants to admit this, but the appearance is better now too as these helmets don’t look like road helmets, but rather match the baggy clothing and armor worn by All Mountain riders today.
Retention systems are better too, as a width and height adjustable halo around lower back of the head is pretty standard now. These helmets fit better and don’t rely on the straps to stay in place during aggressive descending and jumping.
Finally, there’s a lot of other features like MIPs crash protection, anti-microbial pads, GoPro and bike light mounts.
It may be time to upgrade that trusty lid of yours, so stay tuned as we review each helmet in the coming weeks.
