The 2020 Trek Top Fuel – Updated geometry, longer travel and much more.

Boasting one of the fastest cross country factory teams in the world – Trek used the collective feedback to update its flagship race machine. The design changes are in response to changing OXC course features and the upcoming Olympics – preparing its athletes for the demands of battling the fastest mountain biker racers on earth. The Top Fuel has long been the bike of choice for speed and efficiency on both cross country courses and marathon rides. The new models combine Top Fuel’s deep race heritage – harnessing the confident control of a longer-travel bike and a snappy XC race bike, that Trek claims descend like a rocket. Read on and get to know the new Top Fuel.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9

Factory Team Issue Trek Top Fuel 9.9 – we all know red bikes go faster. Coming to a World Cup near you.

Treks Top Fuel is updated with longer travel, new suspension design and an all-new geometry that’s suited to racing and a whole lot more. Trek is definitely aiming the Top Fuel at more than the cross country crowd – moving from race day only to a shred daily whip.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 shock

One of the biggest updates to the Treks Top Fuel line is shock orientation and main pivot placement.

This change in design moves Top Fuel from a bike only racers appreciate to a cross country bike that’s well-suited to both racing and an all-around. Providing what Trek feels is a nearly perfect ride on any trail for any rider. Earlier this spring, US Marathon Mountain Bike National Champion Payson McElveen (Orange Seal Off-road) rode the new Top Fuel to a record FKT on the 100-mile White Rim Trail in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park, beating the previous record by nearly 15 minutes. Proof in the concept that Treks new Top Fuel can shred for miles and still be comfortable to ride.  Read on and find out more.

Let’s dive into the updates: More travel, more control, and 13-degree stem

Trek Stem Top Fuel

A 13-degree 35mm stem matches the newly slackened head tube and longer reach.

The previous Top Fuel models featured a 100mm fork and 100mm of rear travel – standard for most cross country race fare. With courses evolving towards features and more technical driven riding longer travel and nibble handing are paramount.  The new Top Fuel models have a longer 120mm fork and 115mm of rear travel – for those that would like to go the extra 10mm the new Top Fuel can take a max of 130mm travel fork.

New Top Fuel models also feature an overhauled frame with a slacker head angle and a longer reach for confidence and control on rough descents. The new Top Fuel arrives with a 13-degree stem – designed to work with the frames new slack head tube angle 67.5/68 degrees depending on how you flip the chip. The 13-degree also makes turning the Top Fuel into a rowdy trail rider is as simple as flipping the stem. With the slacker head tube, Trek also steepened the seat tube from 74-degrees to 75-degrees, said to give the bike a solid pedaling feel along with the updated forward main pivot.

Trek Top Fuel 2020 Geo

Trek Top Fuel 2020 Geometry – with high and low chip orientations

Each of the models in the new Top Fuel lineup features a wider handlebar and shorter stem, a dropper post, and a TwistLoc dual remote lockout that makes it easy to simultaneously lock the front and rear suspension for sprints and climbs. The shorter stem comes with the update in reach. The New Top Fuels arrive with a 35mm stem – previous models arrived with 80mm. Comparatively, its predecessor the new Top Fuel nearly an 11mm longer reach moving from 427/436mm to 440/445mm reach – depending on chip orientation. All new Top Fuels are decked out in SRAM 12-speed Eagle components with a 32 tooth chainring. The new frame is a dedicated one-by, with a max chainring size of 34 teeth. All Top Fuels from size small to XXL will arrive with 29-inch wheels – something that Trek has adjusted within the past using its Smart Wheel sizing which supplied smaller bikes with 27.5 wheels to accommodate trail and stand over height. Trek feels the new Top Fuel is as much about capability as it is speed. Since most riders stand up and move around on the bike a lot more, playing into the nibble handling – Trek went with 29-inch wheels on all sizes- feeling the 29-inch wheel at speed is easier for shorter riders to roll over bigger trail obstacles faster.

Trek Mono link chip

Each new model features Mino Link adjustable geometry, now integrated into the upper shock mounting bolt making it easier to access and use

Trail bike tech, race bike mentality

The new Top Fuel frame has similar design elements to Trek’s trail bikes, including a Straight Shot down tube for extra stiffness without the extra weight and Knock Block frame defense that prevents damage from spinning bars and fork crowns – integrated into the headset. Each new model features Mino Link adjustable geometry, now integrated into the upper shock mounting bolt making it easier to access and use. Control Freak internal cable routing, and Active Braking Pivot, which keeps the suspension active even when you’re on the brakes. Trek feels together with the updated frame and suspension tech the New Top Fuel makes for an ultra-responsive and sure-footed ride that’s fast on race day and ripping around the trails for fun.
