2018 Rocky Mountain Race Series announced
Chocolate Bunny Productions has announced the 2018 Rocky Mountain Race Series, a multi-discipline mountain bike series in Colorado and New Mexico. The series will include downhill, cross country, short track, and dual slalom.
The Rocky Mountain Race Series will kick-off May 2018 and feature one event per month through August 2018. The series will include categories for juniors ages 8 to 18, in three-year age groups, and 10-year age groups for adults in both endurance and gravity disciplines.
“We are really excited to bring this new series online for the region. We feel that there is a calling to bring back the multi-discipline format to the region,” said Keith Darner, race director of The Rocky Mountain Race Series and president of Chocolate Bunny Productions. “With the growth of the region’s junior programs such as Durango Devo, SMBA and the Colorado High School MTB League, we want to foster the future of the sport and provide this growing category of racers a place to exhibit their training and racing skill sets alongside their friends and family.”
RMRS Dates and Locations
- May 18 – 20: Pajarito Mountain – Los Alamos, New Mexico
- June 15 – 17: Crested Butte Mountain Resort – Crested Butte, Colorado
- July 13 – 15: Sol Vista Bike Park – Granby Ranch, Colorado
- August 3 – 5: Powderhorn Mountain Resort – Grand Junction, Colorado
- August 17 -19: Purgatory Resort – Durango, Colorado
The downhill courses will be challenging for elite-level riders, and feature alternative lines or completely different courses for category 2 and 3 riders. Dual slalom will be held at three or four of the venues. Cross country courses will feature varying lengths for different categories, with longer courses going outside of ski area boundaries. Short track will be run using the miss-and-out format, where the last racer across the line will be pulled from the race each lap until it comes down to the last two racers.
“Having a race series that will make racing accessible to junior racers is exactly what the sport of mountain bike racing needs right now,” said Jessie Bronson, SMBA program director. “It is so important for the riders of tomorrow to have access to a race series that is geared toward building race skills in an accessible and supportive environment.”
