2017 RockShox Super Deluxe Coil released

The big news of this announcement is coil shocks in the RockShox line-up have been vastly improved. Long known for their pillow-like, stiction-free performance, coil shocks have found a home in downhill rigs where weight and pedaling efficiency is not as critical. They’re just more challenging to control and the technology and real-estate issues have held them back to the smaller gravity market. But with significant R&D efforts from companies like Push Industries and Cane Creek, the viability of coil in All Mountain bikes has been affirmed. RockShox has invested significant R&D to join that party and expand their coil sweet spot to All Mountain Bikes and Trail bikes.

Remote Lockout and Sag Gradients

Two big improvements to this coil offering is the obvious and long-overdue Sag Gradient lines and the not-so-obvious Remote Lockout. Sag Gradients are lines in the shaft that indicate where the rubber stopper is positioned when the shock is compressed. This will be a very useful tool during setup as a measuring stick was previously used to measure sag during setup. Can you imagine a modern air shock today without Sag Gradients?

Sag Gradients are now printed on the shaft.

The other innovation brought in, Remote Lockout is not an obvious pairing but it certainly expands the sweet spot of the coil shock. The rider will now be able to put the shock in ‘threshold’ or ‘platform’ mode with a remote trigger on the handlebar.

There are four Super Deluxe coil shocks available in this release. And with the ‘Super’ designation (as opposed to just ‘Deluxe’) all these shocks have external oil reservoirs for greater damping control. The models are:

  • Super Deluxe Coil RCT
  • Super Deluxe Coil RT Remote
  • Super Deluxe Coil RC World Cup
  • Super Deluxe Coil R

All are available OEM only at this time with aftermarket options to be announced soon. Weights and pricing have not been released for these shocks.

Super Deluxe Coil RCT

The Super Deluxe RCT is the highlight of this release bringing full damping support and adjustability into the platform. Solid Threshold adjustment for pedaling performance, low speed compression adjustment to fine tune the ride to any trail and condition, the unmistakable feel of a coil spring and RockShox’s Super Deluxe design.

Highlights
  • Native metric design
  • Consistent, coil-spring performance
  • Independently tunable compression circuits/checked rebound
  • Mounting options: trunnion mount, bearing mount, Standard DU.
Features and Benefits
  • External rebound damping adjustment
  • 2-position threshold adjustment (Open/Pedal) with low speed compression adjustment in Open mode
  • Steel springs available in 50lbs increments from 350lbs to 650lbs (depending on length)

Super Deluxe Coil RT Remote

Coil rear shocks are inherently more active than air shocks with a very active spring and lack of seals and stiction in a main chamber. Remote rear shocks have made their way to the race EWS with increased usability since the rider doesn’t have to take the hands off the bars. Riders can conserve energy and accelerate faster by switching to the “Threshold” mode, and click back into “Open” for full shredding capabilities.
