Yak Ru – Annapurna Challenge ’14, the preeminent mountain biking enduro style race concluded on May 12 after 6 racing days in the remote Himalayas of Nepal. The race route traversed five of Nepal’s most beautiful and remote districts covering 240km in this 5-stage race. The formidable Thorong-La pass (altitude 5416m) was the most daunting stage for all participants, especially the riders traveling from sea level. International and Nepali riders agree that they are humbled by the mountain, but this high altitude race is not for the weak of spirit or faint of heart.

For its fifth stop, the Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series invited riders to Kirchberg in Tyrol. Despite the not-so-good weather forecasts, more than 250 starters followed the call and were rewarded with more than 1650 meters of descending on fun trails. At the end of the weekend it was André Wagenknecht and Anneke Beerten who had the fastest overall times.

Jon Odams from Sans Souci took out the fastest race time on both race tracks in Kempsey on the weekend and is now the new series elite leader of the Rollercoaster Gravity Enduro State Series/Powered by Flow MTB. Newcastle’s Graeme Mudd was second overall in the Elite Men’s ahead of none other than 24 Hour Solo MTB World Champion Jason English from Port Macquarie, who seems to have caught the “enduro” racing bug. Sydney’s Oliver Kristevic was fourth ahead of Max Richardson from the Central Coast. In the Elite Female field, Genevieve McKew further increased her lead in the series, winning ahead of local racer Belinda Green.
