How to bleed a SRAM Guide Brake

If your brake bite point has started to fluctuate, the lever can be pulled all the way to the bars or if the brake is more than one year old, then it’s time to replace the brake fluid and thoroughly bleed it. If you have SRAM Guide Brakes we’ll show you how to do it correctly, removing all the air from the system.

For brakes that use DOT as fluid it’s important to bleed the system once a year to ensure perfect function.

  • SRAM/Avid bleed kit (Bleed Kit)
  • Gloves
  • Protective glasses
  • Zip ties or straps to hold the brake lever near the bar

How to

Before bleeding remove the wheel and prepare both syringes. Fill one half full and the other one third full with brake fluid.

Nachdem die Spritzen mit Bremsflüssigkeit befüllt sind, werden sie oben verschlossen
After filling the syringes with brake fluid close them off at the top…
... und im Anschluss durch Zug am Spritzenstempel mit Unterdruck letzte Luftblasen aus der Flüssigkeit gelöst.
…and then pull the syringe plunger lever to create a vacuum, air will now be released from within the fluid, repeat until no more air bubbles are released from the brake fluid.
Diese gelöste Luft nun aus der Spritze drücken. Hierzu die Öffnung nach oben richten
Now push the released air out of the syringe. Hold the opening upwards to do this.
Die Druckpunktverstellung entgegen der Pfeilrichtung komplett zurückschrauben
Turn the bite point adjuster away from the arrow to the maximum position.
Der Hebel kann, muss jedoch dann nach unten ausgerichtet werden. und der Riemen bereits am Lenker befestigt werden.
Then turn the lever downwards and position the strap on the bars to use later.
Bei neuen Belägen reicht es die Transportsicherung einzubringen ...
With new pads you should use the transport guard …
... sollten sie jedoch bereits an- oder abgefahren sein, müssen sie demontiert ...
… if they are already worn, or worn out you will need to remove the pads …
... und der Bleed-Block eingesetzt werden.
….and install the bleed block.
Dann die untere Schraube lösen ...
Then remove the lower screw …
... und die zur Hälfte gefüllte Spritze ansetzen.
… and attach the half filled syringe.
Nun die obere Schraube lösen und auch hier die Spritze ansetzen.
Now remove the upper screw and attach the other syringe.
Im Anschluss ca. 5 - 10 ml der unteren Spritze nach oben durchdrücken. Dabei darauf achten, dass die Spritz anders als hier im Bild wirklich luftleer ist.
Then press through approx 5 – 10 ml from the lower syringe. Make sure that the syringe is really air free, unlike in the picture.
Nun mit Hilfe des des Riemens, Gummibands o.ä. den Griff am Lenker fixieren.
Now using the strap, rubber band or similar hold the brake lever close to the bars.
Der Bremssattel wird entlüftet indem man an der unteren Spritze mit Bedacht ein Vacuum aufbaut und so Luft aus dem System zieht.
The brake calliper is bled by carefully creating a vacuum in the lower syringe and pulling the air out of the system.
Den Riemen lösen, den Hebel langsam zurück führen und gleichzeitig den Druck auf der unteren Spritze aufbauen.
Release the strap and allow the lever to slowly return to its position whilst simultaneously building up pressure on the lower syringe.
Nun die obere Spritze verschließen.
Now shut the upper syringe.
Dann die untere Spritze demontieren und die Schraube wieder einbringen.
Then remove the lower syringe and re-fit the screw.
Nun auch an der oberen Spritze ein leichtes Vacuum aufbauen um den Hebel zu entlüften.
Now build a slight vacuum on the upper syringe in order to bleed the lever.
Dann die Spritze ebenfalls entfernen, Schraube eindrehen und den Griff mit klarem Wasser reinigen.
Then remove this syringe, re-attach the screw and clean the lever with clean water.
Den Griff wieder in die vorherige Position bringen, bei Bedarf die Beläge wieder einsetzen und das Laufrad montieren.
Return the brake lever to the original position and if necessary refit the brake pads and then put the wheel back on.
