5 ways to ride without a pack this summer
Let’s face it: nobody actually enjoys riding with a backpack. Sweaty backs and movement-restricting straps are just a couple of the drawbacks of using a pack. Not to mention the constant reminder of it swinging around in the corners and smacking you in the back of the head on the steeps. Packs are literally a pain in the back(side).
While nothing can beat the feeling of packless riding, it is still important to carry the essential spares and tools to help you out in a pinch. Luckily, riding pack-less is now easier than ever as more and more companies are developing new ways to carry riding essentials on our bikes and body. In no particular order, here are our top five ways to stash your kit so you can experience the freedom of riding without a backpack this summer:
Strapping tubes and levers to your frame
The idea of strapping tubes to frames has been around in enduro racing for a while and is now becoming increasingly popular with trail riders. It’s a great way of always having a tube and tyre levers with you, and you don’t notice it until you need it. Here at Enduro Mag we particularly like the Backcountry Research Mutherload strap for its well thought out design and bomb-proof build quality.

Storage clothing
Bib shorts and base layers with pockets are a good way to carry food, water and spares securely on your person. The only drawback of this idea is that sharp objects such as tools are held against the body which can be potentially hazardous in a crash. Some of our favourites include the Specialized SWAT (Storage Water Air Tools) bibs and the RACEFACE Stash tank for their well designed pockets and ample storage space.

Tool storage in the bike
There are heaps of products out there that let you store tools in different parts of your bike such as in the bottom bracket and in your handlebars. However, one new product that really stands out is OneUp’s EDC Tool System, that lets you stash all the essential tools and spares in your steerer tube. It’s an awesome way to always have your tools with you, and looks pro as hell!

Protection Vests
Combining protection with storage for tools, food and water it’s no wonder vests such as the Alpinestars Paragon have become super popular with enduro racers. The Paragon vest features a Level 1 CE-certified back protector and three pockets as well as space for a hydration bladder. The vest fits nicely under your jersey and we promise it won’t make you look like a storm trooper!

Hip Packs
Stop being a fanny, wear a bum bag! Hip packs are a great compromise for those wanting to ride with a free back but not ditch the pack all together as they have lots of storage space yet are barely noticeable whilst riding. One example is the EVOC hip pack pro, Winner of the DIA 2017, as it has plenty of storage for tools and spares as well as a 1.5 L bladder.
