Wout will ride Roubaix

Team Jumbo-Visma have confirmed that Belgian champion Wout van Aert will compete at Paris Roubaix on Sunday.

“Back racing” Van Aert himself tweeted on Thursday morning.

The 27-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 before the Tour of Flanders forcing him to miss the race and spend seven days in isolation. On Tuesday, team director Merijn Zeeman confirmed that after “many examinations” Van Aert had been given the all-clear to train and had subsequently travelled to Spain for warmer weather.

In the same interview, Zeeman conceded that if van Aert would race on Sunday it would be in a team role rather than as a leader.

“We wanted Wout to be top in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. That was unsuccessful and a disappointment. Wout will only appear at the start of Roubaix if he can play a role and that will be to mean something to a teammate. He must be able to do something there, for example in the service of Laporte, Teunissen, or Van Hooydonck,” Zeeman said.

In addition to Van Aert, Jumbo-Visma’s line-up for Sunday is: Edoardo Affini, Timo Roosen, Mick van Dijke, Nathan van Hooydonck, Mike Teunissen, and Christophe Laporte.
