Wout van Aert reflects on his Tour-ending time trial crash

Wout van Aert’s debut Tour had been going so well. He’d won a stage, his team had won four, and he was one of the favourites for the stage 13 time trial. But then, with a little more than a kilometre to go in that ITT, Van Aert hit a barrier on a tricky right-hand bend and went down hard.

At first the injury looked catastrophic. Spectators and Van Aert’s team staff helped to cover the wound with some nearby advertising cloth, and there was a real sense of panic among those present. But thankfully, the injuries turned out to be less severe than first thought: ‘just’ a deep gash to his thigh, with no breaks or other serious damage. Van Aert had surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

A day after the time trial, Velon caught up with Van Aert to get the Belgian’s take on the crash and its significance. You can see that interview above.
