Wout van Aert ‘recovering from appendicitis’
Wout van Aert said on social media on Saturday that he was “recovering from appendicitis.”
Van Aert has not made a race start since the Amstel Gold Race as he is now looking ahead to goals later in the season like the Tour de France and the Tokyo Olympics. He had apparently been planning to take part in Wings for Life World Run event, but appendicitis derailed those plans.
“Just literally out of the running. I’m recovering from appendicitis, so unfortunately no [Wings for Life World Run] for me,” he wrote on Twitter. “Looking ahead to the preparations for the Tour and the Games.”
Van Aert did not clarify whether he had undergone surgery to treat the issue.
Assuming his recovery goes according to plan, Van Aert is next slated to race at the Critérium du Dauphiné, which gets underway on May 30.
Even letterlijk uit de running. Ik ben herstellende van een blindedarmontsteking, dus helaas geen @wflworldrun voor mij. Blik vooruit op de voorbereidingen op de Tour en de Spelen. pic.twitter.com/NcyXlHwsQH
