Women's Cycling Weekly: issue 34
Hello! Welcome to Women’s Cycling Weekly issue 34 ♀️
It’s a weird week. If we thought we were in some kind limbo in June we are definitely in one now. There’s no racing of note to report back on, and nothing coming up this weekend. Of course, the Olympics are just over a week away, but that’s for the next issue.
So, it’s a slimmed-down version for this week, that basically contains what scant news is out there plus the usual recommendations. A bit like it was in the off-season, except without ‘cross results and I’m too tired to scour around for extra content and don’t have time to read books.
Enjoy x
News
- The results of part one of The Cyclists’ Alliance rider survey were released this week. For this year, the annual survey has been split into three parts; Working Conditions, Legal and Ethics, and Team Culture. Amongst the findings was the obvious yet still depressing, news that wage disparity between WWT and Continental riders is increasing:
- To read the full results of part one of the survey click here.
- It’s a last-min trip to Tokyo for Alison Jackson who will be heading to the Olympic Games to represent Canada after a smaller nation pulled out leaving room for a third spot. Read all about it here.
- The Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta has been extended to four days from three, one of which will include a mountain time trial. It will run from 2nd-5th September.
- The list of teams that will race at The Women’s Tour in October has been announced. All nine WWT teams will take part as well as six Continental squads. Full list here.
- Cedrine Kerbaol, Gladys Verhulst, and Sandra Lévénez were allegedly snubbed from Arkea Samsic’s Giro Donne team after it emerged they would leave the squad at the end of the season. Which seems…unfair.
Turns out Arkea didn’t take Sandra Lévénez, Cedrine Kerbaol or Gladys Verhulst to the Giro Donne because it looks like they’re off the new Cofidis women’s team in 2022. https://t.co/dQn081YUf8

Gender data gap of the week ↔️
Pinched the name of this section from the wonderful Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisible Women newsletter as referenced by Lexi in her Tweet:
@CCriadoPerez another gender gap courtesy of an article in @cyclist – I’ve added in the correct gender terms to correct the article.. the study of males aged 21 isn’t even sourced pic.twitter.com/O7u0EuQyQf

Technological advances ⚡
Some amazing developments in just one week!
Race seems to be produced using 4G techology (don’t see planes on flightradar) but signal seems pretty good.
