Wiebes doubles up wins at the Women's Tour

Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) won back to back stages at the Women’s Tour after sprinting to victory at stage 5 into Clacton. World Champion Elisa Balsamo (Valcar-Travel & Service) out sprinted Marjolein Van ‘T Geloof (Drops-Le Col s/b Tempur) to take second.

Demi Vollering (SD Worx) finished safely in the peloton and retained her lead on the overall by over a minute with one stage to go.

There was a flurry of attacks to start the day but it wasn’t until Hayley Simmonds (Cams-Tifosi) attacked after 10 km that a move stuck. Simmonds gained up to four and a half minutes before her gap started to drop with 50 km remaining.

After the intermediate spring in Mistley a group of three chasers, including two BikeExchange riders, went after Simmonds. Sarah Roy and Ane Santesteban of BikeExchange and Elise Chabbey of Canyon-SRAM hovered in between the peloton and Simmonds and with 21 km to go Simmonds lead had dropped to only a minute. She was finally picked up by the peloton with 15 km, just in time for Tenpenny Hill.

The peloton sprinted to the finish together and Wiebes once again proved the fastest.
