Wellens nabs stage 5 of the Vuelta a España from the break
Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) nabbed his first ever Vuelta a España stage victory on Saturday, making a long day off the front count in Sabiñanigo.
The 29-year-old Belgian joined the break in the early goings of stage 5 alongside Guillaume Martin and Thymen Arensman and the trio managed to stay away to the finish. Martin and Wellens pulled away from Arensman in the uphill run to the line and then Wellens left Martin behind in the final hundred meters to take a convincing win.
A little over two minutes behind the three leaders, race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) was the next rider across the line, picking up a handful of seconds with his rivals just behind.
