Wahoo acquires Speedplay pedals

Speedplay zero pedal

Wahoo Fitness, a company best known in cycling for its indoor smart trainers and GPS bike computers, has announced its acquisition of Speedplay pedals for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition is the second from Wahoo in as many months, with the American company recently acquiring the Sufferfest online training platform.

Speedplay, best known for its lollipop-shaped dual-sided road pedals, is an American company with a long history in producing a range of performance clipless pedals with unique features. The company is commonly a favourite amongst bike fitters for its large range of pedal axle widths and adjustable cleats.

According to a press release from Wahoo, the company seeks to bring its commitment to smart training, its extensive suite of products, and its history of innovation to the Speedplay brand. “By focusing on the needs of cyclists across all disciplines, Wahoo intends to put Speedplay pedals on as many bicycles as possible and continue to drive creativity at this celebrated brand.”

Speedplay’s existing product range feels like an odd fit for the tech-company but history may provide a clue for where things could go next. Before Garmin acquired the MetriGear Vector pedals back in 2010, the initial system design was based within a Speedplay Zero pedal spindle. And then there was the public failure of the Brim Brothers powermeter, where the DPMX was integrated into a Speedplay Zero cleat.

Wahoo’s closest competitor, Garmin, has a long history of growing its product portfolio through acquisitions, and it’s clear Wahoo Fitness is now following a similar path. Given the loyal following that Speedplay pedals have, we’re unlikely to see any major changes to the existing product range. However, given Wahoo currently doesn’t offer a power meter solution, the next phase seems quite likely.
