Layoffs at Bell, Giro, Blackburn While Vista Announces It Will Hold Onto the Brands

In a recent post, Bicycle Retailer announced that Vista Outdoor reduced the workforce at Bell Sports, Giro and Blackburn headquarters in Scotts Valley, California, by 14 employees from a range of positions including engineering, design, testing and marketing. Layoffs included longstanding managers, which suggests that the positions will be permanently closed. Reportedly, the explanation was that Vista was downsizing the brands to better fit the current landscape. (Read more.)

European Carbon Manufacturer Rein4ced Aims to Replace Workers With Robots

Rein4ced, a European start-up carbon manufacturer, hopes to employ automation and a new material process to put an end to the carbon industry’s vicious cycle of cheap Asian labor, problematic end-of-use recycling, and to the parade of smoke-belching container ships that deliver bicycles by the millions to affluent Westerners located halfway around the globe. Vail Resorts to Acquire 17 Mountains in North America

Vail Resorts, Inc. announced it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire 100% of Peak Resorts, Inc. at a purchase price of $11.00 per share, subject to certain conditions, including regulatory review and the approval of Peak Resorts’ shareholders.
This adds 17 U.S. ski areas to Vail’s network of resorts, doubling the current 17 to 34. All of these resorts are located near major metropolitan areas, including New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Louisville. (Read more.)

7 Protective Frame Tapes Ridden & Rated

Soooooo … you just bought a new bike. It wasn’t cheap. And it looks sweet as! But a month of shuttles and aggressive trail riding will make any bike look as if it’d been flogged with a chain. Applying some protection to that new ride will help keep it looking shiny and new a lot longer than just plain old paint.
Maybe it’s a vanity thing, but when some people are forking out anywhere from $7k to $10k for a complete bike these days, investing in some kind of protective tape or film to keep it looking fresh just seems like common sense. (Read more.)
