Vini Zabù suspended for 30 days
The UCI announced on Monday that its Disciplinary Commission had decided to hand Italian ProTeam Vini Zabù a suspension of 30 days retroactive to April 7 after two members of the team returned adverse analytical findings within a 12-month period.
Then-team member Matteo Spreafico tested positive for Enobosarm (ostarine) in samples collected on October 15 and 16 during last year’s Giro d’Italia, while Matteo De Bonis tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition control on February 16.
Italian police reportedly conducted numerous searches of the homes of Vini Zabù riders following the UCI’s announcement of De Bonis’s positive test.
With two riders testing positive within the span of 12 months, Vini Zabù faced a potential suspension of between 15 and 45 days. The team announced on April 7 that it would be withdrawing from racing, and the suspension the squad received on Monday retroactively starts on the day of that announcement. It will therefore end on May 6, two days before the start of this year’s Giro.
The team announced on April 14, however, that it would be pulling out of the Italian Grand Tour. Giro organizers announced that Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec would take the wildcard spot left vacant by Vini Zabù’s withdrawal.
