Story of the Day: Van der Poel and Alvarado take Superprestige Ruddervoorde wins

Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) made the most of his first start of the cyclocross season on Sunday at Superprestige Ruddervoorde. The reigning world ‘cross champ rode to a clear victory in the elite men’s race on the muddy course in Belgium. In the women’s race, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Corendon-Circus) took a dominant win, adding to her growing list of strong results this season.

Van der Poel battled with Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) in the early goings of the men’s event before Laurens Sweeck (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) joined the fray to make it a trio in the lead. The pace then proved too much for Iserbyt, and by the midway point of the race, Sweeck faded. Van der Poel dropped the Belgian and there was no catching him from that point on.

Van der Poel took the win 23 seconds ahead of Sweeck, with Toon Aerts (Telenet Baloise Lions) rounding out the podium in third place.

Alvarado was the clear strongest rider in the women’s event. The 21-year-old Dutchwoman powered to a solo lead in the first lap and none of her rivals came particularly close to pulling even after that. She held on all the way to the finish to take the win.

Sanne Cant (IKO) took runner-up honors 19 seconds later, with Katie Compton (Trek) taking third.

Ganna breaks individual pursuit record twice in one day

Italy’s Filippo Ganna broke the individual pursuit record on Sunday morning in qualifiers at the Minsk round of the UCI Track World Cup, and then he broke his own new record with an even faster time in the final.

Ganna rode to a time of 4:04.252 in the qualifying round, besting a record set earlier this year by American Ashton Lambie, who rode the event in 4:06.407 at the Pan-American Games in Cochabomba, Bolivia. Ganna would break his own record, however, in a battle with Great Britain’s John Archibald in the event final.

Ganna went over a second and a half faster than his qualifying time, setting the new world record at 4:02.647 en route to the victory.

Van den Ham and Rochette defend Canadian ‘cross titles

Michael van den Ham (Easton-Giant) and Maghalie Rochette (Specialized-Feedback Sports) defended their Canadian national cyclocross titles on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Peterborough, Ontario.

The first few laps of the women’s race saw 2018 winner Rochette duel with 2018 runner-up Jenn Jackson (AWI), before Rochette ultimately rode clear. She held out to take the win 38 seconds ahead of Jackson. Sandra Walter (Liv) took third, 3:24 back.

In the men’s race, van den Ham and Marc-André Fortier (Pivot Cycles-OTE) pulled away from the rest of the field early. Fortier took the solo lead after van den Ham crashed, but the defending champion caught back on, and then Fortier crashed, giving van den Ham a gap.

Van den Ham took the win by 24 seconds with Fortier settling for runner-up honors and Alexandre Vialle (Toyota St-Eustache) in third, 2:52 down.

Google buying Fitbit

Google is buying Fitbit for $2.1 billion.

Google’s senior vice president of devices and services Rick Osterloh said in a blog post announcing the acquisition that it was “an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.”

In its own statement containing details of the deal, Fitbit said that it would remain committed to keeping users’ data safe, noting that “Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.”
