Van Aert doubles up at the Dauphiné: Daily News Digest

Story of the Day: Van Aert sprints to Dauphiné stage 5 win
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) won his second stage in a row at the Critérium du Dauphiné, sprinting to a stage 5 victory in Voiron ahead of Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step).
“Everything goes really good this week. I wanted to do a sprint today to get some points for the green jersey but it turns out I was fastest,” van Aert said after his victory.
Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished safely in the peloton to maintain his position atop the overall leaderboard.
The 201-kilometer stage from Boën-sur-Lignon saw a three-rider breakaway get clear in the early goings, but with a potential sprint finish on the menu, the pack kept the escape on a short leash. Nonetheless, it was a tenuous finale as the peloton did not mop up the final survivor of the break – Alessandro de Marchi (CCC) – until the final two kilometers of the stage.
When the catch was made, Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) tried to solo clear, and was joined by Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data). The pack closed down the attack inside the last kilometer while rounding the final corner, and as the head of peloton pulled even with the pair, Alaphilippe launched his sprint with van Aert locked onto his wheel.
Van Aert quickly surged past Alaphilippe to take over at the front. The three-time cyclocross world champ held on to take the win by a healthy margin as a hard-charging Bennett ran out of road to pull even and settled for second. One day after scoring an elusive first WorldTour win, van Aert now has two.

The Dauphiné continues with Friday’s climber-friendly stage 6, 229 kilometers from Saint-Vulbas to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne.

Cobo found guilty of anti-doping rule violation, Froome could be in line for 2011 Vuelta win
The UCI’s Anti-Doping Tribunal has found Juan José Cobo guilty of an anti-doping rule violation based on biological passport abnormalities from 2009 and 2011.
According to a UCI statement, the Anti-Doping Tribunal has imposed “a three-year period of ineligibility on the rider.” The now-retired Cobo, 38, last raced for the Torku Sekerspor Continental squad in 2014.
The official statement does not make mention of stripping any victories from Cobo’s palmares, with the Spaniard still having a right to appeal, but he scored several big results in the referenced period of his career. Most notable of those results is an overall victory at the Vuelta a España victory in 2011.
Chris Froome (Ineos) – who is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries sustained in a crash while reconning the Critérium du Dauphiné’s stage 4 time trial – finished second in that year’s Vuelta. Should the UCI ultimately nullify Cobo’s results from that period and award the victory to the runner-up, Froome would be in line to add a seventh Grand Tour title to his palmares.
Hip fracture added to Froome’s list of injuries
Following his Dauphiné recon crash and subsequent evaluation at a nearby hospital, Chris Froome was transferred to Saint-Étienne University Hospital for further treatment.
There, he was diagnosed with a fractured hip in addition his already lengthy list of injuries, L’Equipe reports.
According to an Ineos statement, Froome spent six hours in surgery.

“First things first, the surgery was a success,” said Dr. Richard Usher, according to the statement.
“Chris woke up this morning and was reviewed by the intensive care consultants and the orthopedic specialist who operated on him and they’re both very happy with his progress to date.”
Froome is likely to stay at the hospital for the next few days.
Niewiadoma wins Women’s Tour stage 4, Lippert leads
Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-Sram) won the fourth stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, out-kicking Liane Lippert (Sunweb) at the end of the 158.9-kilometer trek from Warwick to Burton Dassett.

The duo surged clear from a small lead group in the uphill finale, and Niewiadoma, who won the overall title at the 2017 Women’s Tour, proved fastest at the hilltop finish. Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) was next across the line, seven seconds later. Lippert now holds the race leader’s jersey on countback, with Niewiadoma sitting second overall on the same time.
The lumpy stage featured three ascents of the finishing climb, which gave the punchier riders in the Women’s Tour peloton ample opportunity to break up the race. Niewiadoma, Lippert, and Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) did just that on the first trip up, bridging to the early break.
A select group ultimately caught the leaders, but Niewiadoma and Lippert powered away for good on the final climb, and Niewiadoma took the stage 4 win.

Next up at the Women’s Tour is a hilly fifth stage that runs 140 kilometers from Llandrindod Wells to Builth Wells.
