USA Cycling cancels almost all 2020 national championships
USA Cycling has cancelled almost all of its 2020 national championship events for 2020, the governing body announced Wednesday.
Most of the events had already been rescheduled to autumn dates in the hopes that the United States would have a better handle on COVID-19, thus allowing the events to be held safely. USA Cycling has determined that will not the be case.
The following events will not run in 2020:
- Pro Road National Championships
- Amateur Road National Championships
- Masters Road National Championships
- Gran Fondo National Championships
- Mountain Bike National Championships
- Elite and Junior Track National Championships
- Masters Track National Championships
USA Cycling cited in their decisionmaking the large number of entrants attracted to National Championships from around the country, as well as the difficulty in obtaining local permits.
“As we have gotten closer to decision dates, it has become clear that many of the challenges in conducting safe and fair Nationals are insurmountable. In the end, we do not feel confident that we can ensure the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and host communities,” USA Cycling said in a statement.
Current national champions in all cancelled disciplines, including Ruth Winder and Alex Howes within the pro road ranks, will continue to wear their national championship kits until national championship events can be held next year.
Cyclocross nationals, collegiate track nationals, freestyle BMX nationals, marathon mountain bike nationals, and collegiate mountain bike national all remain on the calendar at this time.
