What’s news?
Vuelta a San Juan cancelled
Organizers announced on Monday that the Vuelta a San Juan has been cancelled for 2021 due to the coronavirus.
The weeklong stage race, which had been scheduled to run from January 24 to 31, was expected to draw big names like Chris Froome and Peter Sagan for their first racing action of the season. Reports began to emerge over the past few weeks, however, that there might not be any WorldTour teams at the race. Now, the race has been called off for this year altogether.
The cancellation of the Vuelta a San Juan leaves the early-season calendar without yet another event after the cancellation of the Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the postponement of the the Challenge Mallorca.
Trek-Segafredo reveals 2021 plans for several marquee riders
Trek-Segafredo outlined the 2021 plans of several marquee riders on Monday, revealing the major objectives of Vincenzo Nibali, Bauke Mollema, Giulio Ciccone, Jasper Stuyven, and Mads Pedersen.
Nibali and Mollema are both planning to race both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. Ciccone, meanwhile, will head to the Tour as well before leading the team’s GC charge in his debut appearance at the Vuelta a España.
Pedersen and Stuyven will headline Trek-Segafredo’s Classics campaign, and both riders are also expected to start the Tour.
Rigoberto Urán fractures toe
Rigoberto Urán’s offseason has taken a painful turn as the Colombian all-rounder has suffered a toe fracture. Urán said on Instagram on Monday that he had broken the little toe of his left foot after running into the edge of his bed, posting an x-ray image of the fracture and a video showing his bruised toe as well.
“Another fracture for my palmares, but nothing slows us down,” he wrote.
Astana-Premier Tech unveils 2021 kit
Astana-Premier Tech has revealed the new look that will accompany its new name for 2021.
Made by Giordana, the kit maintains the familiar focus on the team’s traditional light blue, but adds darker blue gradients on the sleeves and the bottom of the jersey in addition to the prominent placement of new co-title sponsor Premier Tech on the jersey.
USA Cycling announces selections for Cyclocross Worlds
USA Cycling has announced the rosters for the upcoming Cyclocross World Championships, which are scheduled for January 30 and 31.
Clara Honsinger, who has enjoyed a strong campaign so far this season, and Katie Compton, who has finished on the Worlds podium numerous times in her career, headline the women’s elite selection alongside Rebecca Fahringer and Kaitie Keough, while Madigon Munro will start the women’s under-23 race.
Curtis White will be the lone American representative in the men’s elite race.
Grégory Baugé retires
French track sprinter Grégory Baugé announced his retirement on Sunday on French television.
Baugé, 35, racked up nine world titles and four Olympic medals over the course of his career, and he had been expected to head to Tokyo for this year’s Olympics before he made the decision to call it a career.
“I have always been at 100% and I found that I was no longer in this pattern,” he told Stade 2. “Overnight, I felt that I was constrained to 90%. That is not enough to seek a performance at the Olympics.”
Pascal Ackermann reportedly hopes to start the 2021 Tour
As Radsport-News reports, Pascal Ackermann is hoping to start the 2021 Tour de France. The 26-year-old German has won two stages each at the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España so far in his career, but has yet to race the French Grand Tour.
Ackermann’s presence at the Tour would make for an interesting situation at the Bora-Hansgrohe team, where Peter Sagan has long led the way in the Tour as a green jersey hopeful, compiling a record seven points classification wins over the course of his career so far. Sagan did not win the jersey in 2020, however, and should Ackermann ultimately be a part of Bora’s Tour plans, it would likely be as a sprint leader, making it much more difficult for Sagan to accrue points in the fast finishes.
