UCI unveils new 2020 MTB calendar
The UCI has unveiled its newly reshuffled calendar for 2020 Mountain Bike World Cup and World Championship events, announcing a new venue for Cross-country Worlds in the process.
Originally scheduled to be held in Albstadt, Germany, from June 25 to 28, Cross-country Worlds will be held alongside Downhill Worlds in Leogang, Austria, in an event that will run from October 5 to 11.
As for the World Cup series, the newly reshuffled collection of cross-country and downhill events are now scheduled to run from September, starting with the Lenzerheide World Cup in Switzerland, through the beginning of November with a total of six events, three of which will feature both cross-country and downhill racing.
Four previously planned World Cup hosts have cancelled their events: Losinj (Croatia), Fort William (United Kingdom), Vallnord Pal Arinsal (Andorra), and Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada).
“The announcement of the 2020 UCI World Cup calendar and the holding of the 2020 UCI World Championships is excellent news for mountain bike, a discipline greatly affected by the consequences of the coronavirus,” said UCI president David Lappartient in a press release. “It is another step, after the announcement of the professional road cycling calendars, towards a resumption of the cycling season from this summer.”
In the same press release, the UCI addressed its plans to address the cyclocross calendar in the near future, saying that it “is now working with its partner Flanders Classics and in collaboration with the different organizers on the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup for the 2020-2021 season. September 12-13: Val di Sole, Italy (XCO/DHI)
September 19-20: Les Gets, France (XCO/DHI)
September 29-October 4: Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic (XCO) – two rounds
October 15-18 : Maribor, Slovenia (DHI) – two rounds
October 29-November 1: Lousa, Portugal (DHI) – two rounds
