UCI Ethics Commission will look into Alexandre Geniez case
As VeloNews reports, the UCI has said that its Ethics Commission is looking into Alexandre Geniez’s (TotalEnergies) domestic violence case after not knowing about the matter until recently. The 33-year-old Frenchman received a four-month suspended sentence on Wednesday.
“The UCI had not previously been made aware of the criminal proceedings against Mr Geniez. As this is a matter that would fall under the jurisdiction of the UCI Ethics Commission pursuant to Appendix 1 of the UCI Code of Ethics, we will draw their attention to the decision from the French court,” the UCI told VeloNews in a statement. “The Ethics Commission will consider whether to ask for the production of documentation with a view to opening disciplinary proceedings.”
News of the case initially emerged in French media in January, when it was reported that a prosecutor was seeking a six-month suspended sentence against Geniez, who was accused of making threats and physical violence against his wife Lucie Garrigues.
A judge ultimately handed down a four-month suspended sentence after finding Geniez guilty of domestic violence.
Geniez continued racing after it was first reported that he was facing charges, riding to eighth overall at the Saudi Tour and taking two stage wins at the Tour du Rwanda. His TotalEnergies team has yet to make any statements on the matter.
