UCI announces fan survey in effort to develop appeal of road cycling
The UCI is taking suggestions.
Cycling’s governing body has announced a public survey that will be open until Tuesday, July 16, allowing “interested parties” to weigh in on a number of topics related to the attractiveness of road racing as a sport.
According to the UCI’s press release on the subject, topics addressed include the “use of earpieces by teams and their riders, use of power meters in competition, team size and budgets, format of events, how events are broadcast, and provision of on-screen data during races, to cite just a few.”
Intended to cast a wide net, the survey is available in English, French, Spanish, Arab, Russian, Portuguese, German, and Italian, and it is part of a larger initiative gathering opinions from different parts of the cycling community. The ultimate goal is to produce proposals to increase the sport’s appeal in the future, in conjunction with a working group composed of riders, teams, race organizers, and media.
According to the announcement, the UCI’s Management Committee decided to enact the “consultation process” in a meeting in Lavey-les-Bains, Switzerland, last June.
“Developing the appeal of road cycling in a world that is changing is one of the central aims of the UCI’s Agenda 2022,” UCI President David Lappartient said in a statement.
“The survey that we are launching today offers everyone the chance to give their opinion and is part of a wider consultation process that will enable the UCI to take steps to modernize road cycling that will meet the expectations of as many people as possible. My thanks go to all those who take a few minutes of their time to contribute to the evolution of our sport.”
Potential survey takers will be pleased to learn that their efforts could potentially earn more than the gratitude of the UCI boss—survey participants will be entered in a drawing to win three nights for two people at Yorkshire road worlds, with access to the VIP hospitality lounge, and “lucky winners will also receive a rainbow jersey signed by the 2019 UCI World Champions.”
If you want to weigh in on the various topics cycling’s governing body seeks opinions on, the survey awaits here. According to the UCI, it will take no more than 10 minutes.
