UAE Team Emirates launches Women's WorldTour Team

UAE Team Emirates announced their plans for launching a UCI women’s World Tour team in 2022 by acquiring the license currently held by Alé BTC Ljubljana. The Emirati team will announce further details in the upcoming weeks as the UCI concludes the World Tour licensing process for next year.

Team manager Mauro Gianetti: “We are pleased to announce that we are working to create a female team to compete on the world stage as part of the UAE ambition to develop cycling, in support of a global project that started back in 2017. Together with the Alè BTC Ljubljana Team we have found the right opportunity and the availability we were looking for and, in collaboration with the UCI, we are preparing all the necessary documents for the completion of the acquisition of the World Tour license starting from 1 January 2022.”

The current Alé BTC Ljubljana team consists of European time trial champion and Olympic and World Championship silver medal winner Marlen Reusser, former world champions Marta Bastianelli and Tatiana Guderzo, Spanish road and time trial champion Mavi García and Vuelta a Burgos stage winner Anastasiia Chursina. No contract extensions for 2022 have been announced yet by the team from Slovenia. The team was founded in 2014 under the name of the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana.

It is rumored that Urška Žigart, the fiancée of UAE Team Emirates star and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar will join the team in 2022.

The UCI Women’s World Tour currently consists of nine teams but the UCI wants to expand this to 15 licenses in 2022.
